Marlene Dietrich had her biography to thank for the fact that she was the first woman singer allowed to sing German lyrics on the stage in Israel. She “wintered” in Hollywood during the Third Reich, and through deep conviction rejected the offers of propaganda minister Goebbels, who wanted to lure her back at all costs. Marlene Dietrich did not return to Germany again until 1944 at risk of her life, accompanying American troops.{{#newBox:}}

The picture on the café wall in the ZOA House is a tribute to Marlene Dietrich. It commemorates the German star’s Israel tour in 1960 – five years before diplomatic relations were established between the two countries. But Dietrich had been living in the United States for a long time at that point. After a short stay in the Federal Republic she started her journey despite a broken shoulder. She was booked by Meyer Weisgal, head of the Weizmann Institute.
