Located in the picturesque setting of Sussex, the Old Bavarian Restaurant is a true New Brunswick institution. Founded in 1985 by the Giermindl family, this restaurant quickly became known throughout the province for its authentic German cuisine, which is served in a dining room with a traditional Bavarian décor. Originally from Passau, the Giermindl family arrived in Canada in 1977.

Originally based in Montreal, Adolf Giermindl continued to explore the provinces of Canada in order to find the ideal place where he could settle with his wife Olga and their nine children. Blocked by a snowstorm in the Sussex area during a business visit to the Maritimes, he fell in love with the area and decided to settle there with his family. The rolling landscape of southeastern New Brunswick reminded him of his native Bavaria.

Initially, a dairy farm, the family’s property later became a butcher shop. A few years later, a restaurant was opened. Today, the family business is made up of three distinct companies: the restaurant, the farm and the slaughterhouse. The business is run by two of the sisters, Inge and Claudia, and Claudia's son, Lukas. When you look at the menu, you will quickly notice that the must-sees of German cuisine are on the menu. Whether you are a fan of “Wiener Schnitzel”, “Sauerbraten” or “Käsespätzle”, Giermindl’s restaurant Old Bavarian will satisfy you with its impressive variety of authentic specialties from German-speaking countries. The same goes for the dessert menu, which offers the traditional “Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte” and “Apfelstrudel”, to name but a few.

The family farm uses traditional farming methods and produces poultry, eggs, pork and beef. All livestock is fed on locally produced grain and fodder. Some of these products, as well as those from the butcher shop, can be found at the Fredericton Boyce Farmers Market. All of these dishes have been prepared on site for almost forty years, making it a reference establishment in New Brunswick and Claudia's pride in being able to serve these traditional dishes to a loyal clientele for several generations. The restaurant Old Bavarian is open all year round, from Friday to Sunday. If you wish to celebrate the “Oktoberfest” in this place that reminds you of Bavaria by its atmosphere and décor, it is strongly recommended to reserve, as it is a particularly popular time of year. If you're lucky, you'll even be welcomed by Marley, Milley, and Maxxi, who form the property's "canine" welcoming committee!
